Project overview

Adelaide Hills Council is undertaking three combined projects on Albert Street, Gumeracha between the Soldiers Memorial Hospital and Randell Terrace to:

  1. Underground existing over-head power lines
  2. Implement a stormwater management system
  3. Deliver a streetscape upgrade

The removal of the existing overhead power lines and stobie poles along Albert Street and the planting of new trees will greatly improve the aesthetics and appearance of the area while helping to achieve these outcomes.

The delivery of this project will make Albert Street more welcoming for residents, businesses and tourists, it should also provide calmer traffic patterns and be more walkable and age-friendly.

The Gumeracha Main Street Upgrade project will deliver a range of improvements, including underground power lines, a new stormwater system, better pedestrian connectivity, and a safer streetscape environment for Gumeracha’s ‘Village Heart’. This community streetscape project is delivered in close partnership with SA Power Networks and the Gumeracha Main Street Group.

The first part of the project, undergrounding of power lines will be delivered by SA Power Networks and their contractor Schwarz Excavations and Civil.

    Latest News
Works are progressing well for the undergrounding of the power lines and construction activities are outside the ‘heart’ of Gumeracha for now. Council has engaged Metro & Country Civil as contractor for the proposed stormwater system for Albert Street. And the art wall will be completed soon.

Trench works for the undergrounding of power lines are heading towards the flat section at Federation Park and the Torrens Valley Community Centre. A switching cubicle will get installed in the verge of Federation Park and some tree clearance has occurred in the last few days.

Adelaide Hills Council successfully ran a tender for construction services for a new stormwater system for Albert Street. Metro & Country Civil aim to commence late October and complete works before Christmas. Construction should take approx. 7-8 weeks.

Detailed design for the streetscape upgrade has been finalised and council will call tenders for construction soon.

    Next Steps

    • Prepare for construction of stormwater upgrade.
    • Council to prepare tender documentation for construction of streetscape upgrade.

Works are well underway now for the undergrounding of the power lines. Recently. the new footpath to the Rocking Horse has been completed and looks great! And finally, the art wall has commenced and will be completed in the next 4-6 weeks.

Trench works for the undergrounding of power lines along Albert Street have crept towards Gumeracha centre and are starting to have an impact on parking for shops as well as on driveways. The trenches will be reinstated with bitumen on Monday, 3 August which will help with the current level of sand and dust along Albert Street.

Naturally, there are inconveniences with a job this size but SAPN’s contractor Schwarz Construction are talking to all affected parties to try to minimise disruptions where possible. As mentioned previously, to achieve the best for Gumeracha, this big project will require the help and patience from the whole community.

Tenders for the construction of the stormwater upgrade have been called and council aims to engage a contractor by September.

    Next Steps

    • Close and assess tender submissions for construction of stormwater upgrade.
    • Council to prepare streetscape detailed design for tender for construction.
