Update December 2020

Our project team has analysed all feedback received during the consultation and developed a public report which was presented at the October 2020 Council meeting. Take a look at the feedback received now.

We also want to update you on the Council decision regarding the Mylor Bike Track.

Sherry Park (adjacent to Mylor Oval) will be considered in the 2021/22 business plan for funding. This means if successful in the 2021/22 budget we will undertake specific discussions with Mylor Oval Committee and consultation with Mylor community (including riders) to develop a design prior to construction.

For now there are no immediate plans to develop a Bike Track in Mylor however we have undertaken safety works at the Aldgate Quarry Bike Trails which we understand many local rides use.

Our biodiversity field team has also levelled eight jumps in the historic BMX track in the Mylor Parklands. We will not be attempting any revegetation of this site for now, rather we will work with the Mylor Parklands Bushcare Group to manage weeds and encourage the natural regeneration of the site.

Background

We know bike riding is a much loved and very popular past time for people across a range of ages in the Adelaide Hills. And our Sport and Recreation Strategy supports ‘non-traditional’ and unstructured recreation opportunities in the region (e.g. mountain biking and BMX).

Important information

  • Council has no funds allocated to a bike track
  • A bike track in Mylor Parklands is prohibited
  • Anyone in and around Mylor can have their say (you don't have to be a rider)
  • Get in touch if you want to chat with our team about your aspirations (engage@ahc.sa.gov.au)

Asking the community about their bike riding aspirations has come about because Council want to develop a sustainable solution that is suitable for riders and protects the native vegetation in Mylor.

At the December 2019 Council meeting it was decided that bike tracks in the Mylor Parkland will be strictly prohibited to avoid further degradation to the native vegetation.

Signs have been installed in the Mylor Parklands outlining what activities can and can not be undertaken. Removing native vegetation is a criminal offence and anyone found damaging or removing vegetation may be fined.

Works are set to commence this month on the new bike track at Sherry Park in Mylor after consultation with key stakeholders reached resolution.

Adelaide Hills Council Director of Corporate Services, Terry Crackett says Council has worked closely with the Mylor Oval Committee, the bike riding community and the English Ale Festival to collaborate on a plan for the site and work schedule.

“This is a really positive shared outcome with all parties working together towards a solution that accommodates the needs of the local community, bike riders and the major users of the Mylor Oval and surrounds.”

Over the past 12 months, Council has consulted with the community about bike riding opportunities in Mylor.

After analysis of the information from the community and additional discussions with stakeholders, we believe that a bike track with jumps that caters for both beginner and more advanced level of riders will meet the needs of the local community.

Council staff and relevant stakeholders have undertaken significant investigations into various locations for the bike track. As previously communicated, Sherry Park adjacent the Mylor Oval has been selected as the most appropriate location for such a facility.

We are also pleased to confirm that Council has received funding from the Federal Government through the Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to plan and construct the track.

The planning phase of this project is progressing with a small group of stakeholders forming a ‘Bike Reference Group’ to assist with the planning the design of the track.

The track design and location will trigger the removal of the old cricket nets that are currently located in Sherry Park and planning is underway for the relocation of these nets.

Demolition of the nets and construction of the new pump track starting in the coming weeks. Works are expected to take a few months and will be carried out with minimal disruption to residents and users of the oval and playground.

Council is now reaching out to those who registered or showed an interest in the Mylor Bike Track.

    Background

Last October we underwent community engagement, focusing on the Mylor community and their thoughts about bike riding. We wanted to better understand the interest level and type of riding experience Mylor residents were after. We received 150 online survey responses (54 responses were from those that actually lived in Mylor).

From those that live in Mylor, the interest in recreation and mountain bike riding came through very strongly, along with creating a space for riders that is out of the Mylor parklands, with a number of people suggesting Sherry Park as an appropriate location.

We have taken this particular feedback, along with the comments provided from representatives from the Mylor Oval Committee, Mylor Primary School, and several targeted meetings with some parents/children, and Sherry Park does seem to be the ideal location. We have considered other locations however these sites have limitations and are not ideal for reasons which we are happy to discuss. Sherry Park is located in the hub of the town, is accessible, has parking, toilets, and building the track near the current play space does make sense as we imagine families being able to bring kids of various ages and utilise the playground/oval/bike track at the same time.

In recent months, the Adelaide Hills Council has received funding through the Federal Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to develop a bike track in Mylor, so we’re almost ready to start some more detailed planning, and this is where you might like to come in!

Are you interested in being on the ‘Bike Reference Group’ for Mylor? The group would help review and refine the design, aiming to meet the community’s needs. We are targeting local Mylor residents, however if you live outside this region but feel you have something to contribute you are welcome.

As there has already been quite a bit of feedback received into what experience people are after, and due to the tight timeframe (the project is expected to be constructed by December 31), we envisage the bike reference group committing to approximately 2 meetings. (And of course Stacey Dutton is available to speak to anyone at other times if needed).

    Update

    • Please let Stacey know if you would like to be part of the Bike Reference Group by Wednesday 1st September via direct email: sdutton@ahc.sa.gov.au

    • Council are currently in the process of engaging a contractor to develop a draft design / concept of the bike track, using the community’s feedback that has already been collected.

    Next Steps

Once the draft concept plan is developed, we will host a meeting with the bike reference group (date to be confirmed-but perhaps a Sunday is best considering that this group could consist of young people). This meeting will give you an opportunity to review the draft design / concept plan and chat to the track builder direct, where they’ll take into consideration any thoughts or concerns.

The construction of the bike track in Sherry Park may mean that the existing cricket nets may need to be relocated, but we are working with the Mylor Oval Committee, the Mylor Cricket Club and the South Australian Cricket Association to find an alternate solution.

Thanks in advance for your support, we look forward to speaking with you and delivering something amazing for this community, and getting the community active and healthy!
