Works are complete
Major works for the Managed Motorway Measures Project are now complete.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport wishes to thank the community for their patience and understanding whilst these important works were undertaken.
Regular speed limits near the Stirling on-ramp are scheduled to be reinstated next week. The temporary speed restrictions have been required to allow the newly resurfaced road to “wear in”. In the weeks after bitumen is laid, traffic use wears the surface and improves the skid resistance and texture of the new road. Typically on a higher speed road, it takes four to eight weeks to reach its final design specification, depending on traffic volumes and weather temperatures.
This is the primary reason for current temporary speed restrictions on the South Eastern Freeway, however there are also safety barrier installation works to be undertaken along this section, which until completed, is safer for motorists with the speed restriction in place.
The 60km/h speed restriction was extended past the newly resurfaced section of the Freeway to align with the new overhead gantry and to allow the Traffic Management Centre to remotely control the speed limit at the end of the work area in the event of a traffic hazard.
What's the project about?
The South Eastern Freeway - Managed Motorway Measures Project, jointly funded by the Australian Government and South Australian Government.
The project has converted the existing emergency lane into a third full time travel lane and implement a Managed Motorway on both the up and down tracks of the South Eastern Freeway between Crafers and Stirling.
The three lane Managed Motorway includes an Intelligent Transport System, with variable speed limits and a Lane Use Management system. This will enable the allocation and control of lanes across the freeway to improve safety and traffic flow.

The Managed Motorway Measures Project will convert the existing emergency lane into a third full time travel lane and implement a Managed Motorway on both the up and down tracks of the South Eastern Freeway between Crafers and Stirling. The three lane Managed Motorway will include an Intelligent Transport System, with variable speed limits and a Lane Use Management system. This will enable the allocation and control of lanes across the freeway to improve safety and traffic flow.
Works on the Crafers on-ramp are required to enable the installation of new LED road lighting and permanent Variable Message Signage.
To complete these important works safely and efficiently, a closure of the Crafers on-ramp is required, with a temporary detour in place during the works (see map below). Access for trucks will be maintained under traffic control.
Road users are asked to please plan ahead and allow extra travel time,observe speed limits, lane restrictions, traffic controllers and take extra care when travelling through the area.
Some noise disturbance can be expected at times while these works are completed, however the work will be managed to minimise disturbance to local residents and businesses as much as practically possible.
