Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall

UPDATE: The Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall Inc held their Annual General Meeting on Monday 31 August 2020.

There was a fantastic level of attendance and show of support from the community, with over 50 people present and 17 people nominating to be considered for the committee. With the retirement of the previous committee, to great thanks, a new committee has been formed with the following members:

Graham Charlton, Vicky Charlton, Adrian Dormer, Jill Francis, Jenny Harders, Antony Herve, Tony Kemp, Geoff Kuehne, Neil Shillabeer, and Anthony White.

The Hall Committee will soon meet again to elect a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, and to engage with its members and capitalise on the enthusiasm shown by the community for the ongoing use of the Oakbank Soliders Memorial Hall.

Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall is a privately-owned community space. Council is assisting the managing committee to collect community feedback about its future.

History

Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall (OSMH) is a privately owned community hall, located at 210 Onkaparinga Valley Road and built in 1926 on land donated by George Edwards.

The hall when completed became the focal point for the community and hosted local dancing, fairs, celebrations, film evenings (every Saturday night prior to TV), concerts, weddings, birthday celebrations and football functions.

Funds to build the hall were raised by the district to commemorate the men and women who enlisted in World War One. Later a memorial plaque was also placed in the hall commemorating the men and women who enlisted in World War Two.

The hall is privately owned by the Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall Committee Inc.

What we are doing now?

We are engaging the local community so we can understand views about the future of the Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall. We want to understand what the community think should happen to the hall and Trust on the hall.

The purpose is to give anyone with an interest in the Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall a chance to have their say on the future of the hall and the Trust.

The future of the hall depends on a group of community members taking over management of the hall (elected onto the Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall Committee).

We are open to all feedback received during this engagement however it is important to note that should a new community group elect to be on the Oakbank Soldiers Memorial Hall Committee and take on running of the hall they will need to demonstrate, via a business case, that they can sustainability manage and operate the finances for running the hall.
