What should replace the Stirling Rotunda?

The Stirling Rotunda replacement design concepts are currently being drafted and finalised based on the Stage 1 consultation feedback. Council will review the draft concepts in preparation for a Stage 2 consultation planned for 2021/2022.

The rotunda in Stirling was recently damaged in a vehicle accident, and subsequently had to be demolished. Council is now seeking design ideas and community input into what a new replacement facility might be.
Background
The rotunda located on the Stirling Library lawns was damaged in a car accident on 6 August 2018 and due to the significance of the damage, was required to be demolished.
The rotunda was built by the Stirling Apex Club as a Centenary of Federation project in 2001.
Community groups have been instrumental in the initial build of the rotunda and its dedication as a memorial as well as ongoing maintenance of the rotunda. The Stirling Library lawn is a very popular space with the community for passive recreation and events. With increasing demand on this space for events, it is a good time to review how the space is used and what facilities would best support the continued use by the community.
Stage 1 Consultation Outcomes
The Stage 1 consultation highlighted the following for consideration:
- Accommodate for the growing / changing role of the library and include greater connection and integration of design between the inside and the outside.
- Ensure the facility has power and WiFi access points.
- Potential functionality for musical performances and presentations.
- Include a functional ‘backdrop’ for a stage/amphitheater while also allowing an open line of sight across the space for traffic travelling in from Aldgate and driving through Stirling.
- A multi-purpose facility, with it being less of a rotunda and more an amphitheater
- Creatively include any new protection measures that need to be installed (i.e. ‘artistic’ bollards / Stirling Spheres).
- Location/placement to accommodate current and future use for events and activities (eg Fringe Events, Markets)
- Retain as much green space as possible and keep the open feel
- Recognition that the site gets a very large number of post school youth utilisation.

Replace Rotunda with Rotunda
I would love to see a paddling pool or interactive water feature for families with small children. If it’s not suitable for that particular place, can we please consider it at another site? I think it would be invaluable for our area.
I think there definitely needs to be a replacement for the demolished rotunda, as it had a lot of use. Personally I really liked the style of the old one and would be pleased to see it replaced with a similar one. I am presuming that insurance will at least partly cover the cost of replacement. Please don't just leave the space empty, as shelter is so often needed.
I believe the rotunda should be replaced, with possibly one of more modern design. It was used on numerous occasions for gatherings, shelter for school children after school, people having picnics on the
lawns.
Replace rotunda with a rotunda. It was used regularly by lots of people so cannot understand the drawn out process this has become for no real reason.
I would like to see the rotunda replaced as it was. It's design was very functional, well used and aesthetically suited to its surrounds. It adds beautiful character to its surrounds. Definitely NO BOLLARDS - detracts for the magnificent natural beauty of the gardens and lawns.

Nothing - the space is fine as is.
Use the money to reinvigorate the eyesore that is the Crafers roundabouts, particularly as this is the first freeway exit and the exit for Mt Lofty so often the first thing visitors and tourists see.
A Phillip Johnson landscape. The library contains PJ's book, that is constantly on loan so seems to be popular.
It could contain a number of the elements already suggested (rotunda, wading pool, indigenous connection, nature play). It wouldn't be cheap, but there would likely be a number of people/businesses willing to contribute. It would be good for a number of local suppliers and businesses, as PJ use local materials and resources only, and contractors. http://www.phillipjohnson.com.au
Loved the rotunda but how about an outdoor amphitheater with slatted timber shade ... surrounded by curved seating - stone or wooden steps for viewing mmm I could draw you a picture ? Alternatively a new timber rotunda - so iconically Aussie ! But maybe one that lends itself better to performance - the old one was only durable as s backdrop ? GL

Another rotunda would add to the beauty of the library lawns as well as offer a quiet place for residents and visitors to enjoy our wonderful Stirling.
A massive Jesus fountain
The rotunda was enjoyed immensely by families with children. It was a safe environment for them to play. It was also great for events and entertainment. It was an important part of Stirling's character. Please build another in wood and make it as close to the original design as possible. A modern steel design will not be the same. Our family has missed the old one.
to cost of replacing the Rotunda should be
The cost of repairing or replacing the Rotunda should be met by the drivers insurance policy , if this is not recoverable maybe the council would have the labour and talent to make the repairs, whilst on the subject would you please let me know what happended to the damaged Rotunda which was taken away very quickly
I think a shelter of some sort for our youth to meet in would be good. My children loved meeting school friends at the rotunda so something that could double as a place for teenagers to meet, with a cover for all weathers would be good.
Would love to see some sort of interactive water feature that kids can play in.
