The Department of Infrastructure and Transport are making it safer for pedestrians to cross Main Street in Crafers by installing a raised Wombat Crossing. The crossing will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. In addition, a 40km/h speed limit will be introduced between Mount Lofty Summit Road and Piccadilly Road.

Works are expected to commence in early 2026. Advance notice will be provided ahead of major construction.

What is a wombat crossing and how does it work?

Wombat crossings have white parallel stripes painted on a raised section of road with pedestrian crossing signs and are usually accompanied by a 40 km/h speed limit. The raised platform encourages motorists to slow down on approach to the crossing, increasing awareness of their surroundings, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Drivers must give way to pedestrians and cyclists on entering the crossing. Pedestrians and cyclists must always ensure it is safe to cross before entering the crossing.

Will on street parking and vegetation be impacted?

To facilitate the installation of the raised Wombat Crossing two existing on-street car parks will be removed. A small number of trees within the vicinity of the crossing may need to be removed ahead of construction.
