The Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) are enhancing safety and access at key junctions in Balhannah.

They are delivering important productivity and road safety upgrades at two junctions in Balhannah:

• The intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road and Junction Road
• The intersection of Junction Road and Jones Road in Balhannah

DIT have now finalised their designs which were informed by community insights, site surveys, and environmental and heritage assessments. This update provides more information on both upgrades, including details about our upcoming information sessions.

Intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road and Junction Road, Balhannah

DIT will be constructing a single-lane roundabout at the Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road, and Junction Road intersection to improve safety at this location.

Key treatments

The construction of a new roundabout will improve safety and traffic movements throughout the intersection. Key treatments include:

• new roundabout featuring a mountable kerb to facilitate heavy vehicle movements
• construction of pedestrian refuges and access ramps
• upgraded lighting
• new line marking
• new asphalt, kerb and guttering
• upgraded shared use paths

To safely accommodate a pedestrian access and refuge, on-street parking near the roundabout on the north eastern side of Onkaparinga Valley Road will be reduced to a single parking space.

Early works are currently underway at the intersection with major construction expected to commence in July 2025. Advance notice will be provided.

Junction of Junction Road, Jones Road, and the rail crossing, Balhannah.

The junction of Junction Road and Jones Road in Balhannah has also been identified as a priority location for targeted safety upgrades. This will include the installation of updated signage and new line marking, as well as improving manoeuvrability at the junction by widening the existing shoulder.

Early works will commence in June 2025 with construction expected to commence from July 2025. Advance notice will be provided.

Community Information Sessions

Questions about these projects? DIT are hosting two community information sessions in Balhannah and invite you to come and meet the project team, view the final concept designs and ask any questions you may have about these projects or the Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package.

These sessions will be held at the Balhannah Soldier’s Memorial Hall, 91 Onkaparinga Valley Road, Balhannah on:

• Thursday, 12 June 2025, 5pm to 7pm
• Saturday, 14 June 2025, 11am to 1pm
