We are working with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to make it safer for pedestrians to cross Main Street in Crafers.
In line with the recommendations of the Crafers Village Design Guidelines endorsed by Council in December 2020, the DIT are installing a new raised Wombat Crossing on Main Street, Crafers between Cox Place and Picadilly Road.
Works will include:
Wombat crossings encourage motorists to slow down, increasing awareness of their surroundings improving safety for all road users. A concept design for the Wombat Crossing on Main Street, Crafers can be viewed below.
The electrical switchboard at the corner of Main Street and Picadilly Road will also be replaced with a new one.
In addition, a new 40 km/h speed limit will be introduced between Mount Lofty Summit Road and Piccadilly Road to improve safety in this pedestrian precinct. The lower speed limit supports the installation of the raised pedestrian (wombat) crossing to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes between vehicles crash and pedestrians at the crossing.

To keep everyone safe, speed and lane restrictions will be in place during work hours. Outside of work hours, speed restriction will remain in place until all works are completed.
Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to take care when travelling through the area. For safety reasons there may be some restricted access. Where required, signage will be in place to direct pedestrians and cyclists to alternative access and/or detours.
Please plan your trip, be cautious around workers and follow the speed limits and signs and direction from onsite traffic controllers.
Access to businesses and properties will be maintained at all times. Advance notice will be provided if temporary access restrictions are required. We encourage community members to continue to support local businesses during these construction works.
For the Wombat Crossing to safely function the existing on-street car park area will be reconfigured to provide one parking space. Please refer to the Raised Wombat Crossing Factsheet for further information.
Vegetation management, including some removals, within the vicinity of the crossing will be undertaken ahead of construction.
There may be some noise during construction as the DIT project team undertake certain activities, but they will do their best to minimise impacts where possible.
Council and the DIT project team would like to thank you for your patience while these important works are undertaken.
