What's happening

In April 2026, we received a request from residents within Oakbank, to rename the private road currently known as 6 Smith Street, Oakbank. The residents have requested the road be renamed to “Anerley Lane” to provide clarity for residents living on the lane way for mail/deliveries and emergency services access. Council has a legislative process to review and address the naming of private roads, and the policy can be viewed on the Adelaide Hills Council website or under our Documents Library.

The policy states that any renaming of private roads requires:

  • Notification to councillors in relation to the proposal (Report to Council).
  • Notification to residents/property owners within a defined catchment of the reserve or public place, or where a name change affects a local road or place which is often given as a reference for access.
  • Notification in the local press and via social media, inviting public comment on the proposal will occur.
Why Anerley Lane?

Three of the housing blocks on 6 Smith Street were divided from a property located on Onkaparinga Valley Road that has historic significance in Oakbank and is called 'Anerley House'. The private lane currently has a street sign for Anerley Lane however the formal name change process has not yet been completed in order to formally recognise this road as Anerley Lane.

Decision & next steps

At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 26 May 2026, Council endorsed the naming of the unnamed private road currently known as 6 Smith Street, Oakbank, to "Anerley Lane" in line with Council's Public Places and Road Naming Policy.

Following this decision, council staff will now undertake the following tasks:

  • Send notification to residents within the affected laneway of the name change.
  • Close the loop with engagement contributors.
  • Organise notification to the following parties:
    • The Geographic Names Unit.
    • Relevant directories services (e.g. Sensis).
    • The applicant(s) who requested the place or reserve name or name change.
  • Update the Register of Community Land (as required by section 207 of the Local Government Act 1999).
  • Update the Register of Public Roads (as required by section 231 of the Local Government Act 1999).
