Council has developed a Draft Play Space Policy and is seeking feedback from the community.
The objective of this draft Play Space Policy is to ensure that play spaces in the Adelaide Hills Council area are appropriately planned, developed and managed, and valued by our community. The policy will assist Council to make strategic, sustainable and equitable decisions regarding play space provision in our region, which will ensure that opportunities for participation broadly across the Adelaide Hills Council are enhanced.

Re the Play Space Policy, firstly it is a great idea however i think it is important to add hard surface play spaces to all levels (including local and neighbourhood). This should be in the form of at least half sized basketball courts, tennis courts or a space that combines sports to facilitate meaningful variety in the play spaces. There are very limited spaces of this nature throughout the Adelaide Hills region, which is a shame, particularly given the beautiful natural environment that surrounds us, hence as there should be a greater emphasis on facilitating and promoting outdoor activities and recreation. The provision of more quality grassed areas will be beneficial to the use and aesthetics of these spaces. There are many winter grass varieties available that are suitable to the high rainfall, cooler climate which should be used. Although there is no specific reference to where these spaces will be located, it would be worthwhile incorporating all existing public spaces, or at the very least identifying at least one space within each township with a high quality design with an emphasis on visual amenity and high usability for all outdoor activities, including sports.

Having read the 'Draft Play Space Policy', it appears to me that these 'play' areas are designed for children up to approximately 9 years of age. What has the council planned for people in the 9-17 age group? These people ,especially males, are the ones who need a challenge (other than on the screen!). Surely these people are perhaps even more needy than the earlier age group as they are the ones most likely to behave in an socially unacceptable way. Skate board runs, huge flying foxes, climbing walls, etc ?!

Hi I would like Play Space to include wild space with minimal controls or requirement for facilities. That way people are encouraged to be truly creative and not sent down some politically correct (and therefore dull and boring) path. I have said it before but unmade roads should be such an opportunity as they would satisfy what in the UK are called Right to Roam areas and are not restricted by insurance issues which make landowners reluctant to allow people to cross their property. With low step over entry and minimal clearance for paths they would encourage people to be tourists at home. I would love to have access to loop trails to ride my horse as having just done my sums, I can't afford to go interstate or overseas for my recreation.
