Help us name the Adelaide Hills Arts & Heritage Hub in Lobethal
Consultation has concluded
18 October update:
We had nearly 50 ideas submitted through this portal and by other methods. They were shortlisted down to Yarn Space, Interwoven, Art at the Heart, ZuHause, Fabrik and Weftspace. The Council will consider a final recommendation at its meeting on 23 October 2018. Watch this space!
As a description, it’s not bad: the Adelaide Hills Arts & Heritage Hub.
But we want to do better. We want a name that tells our story and speaks of the connections and creative community we hope to build here.
Our story
Lobethal is located in the Adelaide Hills, a region that has significance to both Peramangk and Kaurna people. The Arts & Heritage Hub is located in the heart of the classic industrial site of the former Onkaparinga Woollen Mill, a major enterprise in town since the mid-1800s. Generations of Australians have snuggled beneath the beautiful blankets designed and created by the Mill’s skilled local workforce.
Our future
The Arts & Heritage Hub will weave this past into a new, community-centred creative space, telling the history of the site and creating new experiences through exciting arts activity.
Our big picture includes a captivating heritage interpretation, acknowledging the ownership of the traditional Indigenous custodians and telling the stories of former Mill workers. Gallery spaces will show changing exhibitions of contemporary art; visitors will connect and learn from artists by visiting their studios and joining their workshops; Mill Square will play host to outdoor arts events and gatherings.
The Hub will be creative, connected and community-centred.

Contemporary Arts Mill
Most South Australians remember Onkaparinga blankets, so "The Onkaparinga Centre"...or "The Onkaparinga Mill" as an overall name for the centre.....with a pertinent name for each building, according to it's function. Eg...the Warp & Weft Gallery, the Heddle Heritage Museum.....with a bit more research, more weaving terms could be used for Artist in Residence area, Gallery Shop, Library etc.....
Possible words and jumping off points (all are welcome to play with and work with these for further suggestions):
Spool Art and Heritage, Spool and Heddle, Spool and Spindle, Spool and Pencil, Weft and Pencil,
Dobcross (a weaving method).
Apparently the word 'Onkaparinga' comes from a Kauna word meaning 'the women's river'.

Research the brickwork pattern used throughout the site. What is it called? Could it be used in the name?

This gives it a regional identity.
Each space e.g. the gallery, the museum, etc, could then be named separately and in a way which reflected the purpose of the space, thus giving a local identity to the buildings.

The Fabric of Society
“Kurianda Wefthaus”.
Kurianda being (as I understand it) a place of ceremony, Weft referring to the acts of weaving (blankets, stories, lives, the river that runs through it), Haus being a nod to the German Settlers.
How about “The Artful Muhle” - Muhle being the German word for mill.
